Could This Winter Be A Repeat Of 2013 With A Polar Vortex?
CHICAGO (CBS) — The talk of Sunday's snowfall, brought CBS 2 back to December 2013.
That was the start of the shiver-inducing polar vortex winter. It seemed December started out the same then, as it is now.
So CBS 2's Dana Kozlov wanted to know what exactly is the Chicago area in for this winter season.
As temperatures begin to plummet outside, meteorologists inside the National Weather Center offices in Romeoville are beginning their predictions about what lies ahead.
"It's certainly cold for December," said National Weather Service meteorologist Ricky Castro.
But Ricky Castro stops short of saying snowfall the first week of December, like the flakes that fell in December 2013, means we are in for another polar vortex punch.
"I do not want to overly worry people just yet," Castro said. "To say that we will have that type of winter yet."
Hope is what many people may be clinging to as the Chicago area heads into the next seven days.
A fair amount of snow is expected before temperatures nosedive into the single digits, for a high.
Those that endured the 2013-2014 winter, like CBS 2's Dana Kozlov, may recall the snow and frigid temperatures lasted from early December to April.
"Don't panic yet, don't panic yet," Castro said.
That is the best advice right now, don't panic, just prepare.
