Cops: One Held, One Questioned After Separate Boating Incidents
CHICAGO (STMW) -- A Batavia woman who prompted a frantic search when it was believed she fell into the water and went missing was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct because she was "hiding'' while multiple fire and police emergency crews were looking for her Saturday night on the North Side, police said.
In a separate incident on the lakefront Saturday night, a Rogers Park man is being questioned after he admitted he was in a fight with a man who was left in "very critical" condition after falling overboard, Chicago police also said Sunday.
"I'm still shaking,'' said Kristen P. Adam, who was reached by phone early Sunday afternoon. "I don't have a clue what happened. I don't know why I was arrested.
Adam said she was treated "horribly,'' but did not say immediately what occurred that made her feel she was treated badly.
"I have children and a family,'' Adam said. "I don't know what I'm going to do.''
Adam, 42, of west suburban Batavia, was charged with misdemeanor disorderly conduct and violating a Chicago Park District policy for swimming in the harbor water after hours, according to police, who said she was never in any danger.
When Adam was being processed by police, she was only clad in a hospital gown. Police said she did not have much clothing on when the incident occurred, but Adam would not confirm that information.
Multiple air and ground units from the police and fire department responded about 10 p.m. to a call of a woman in the water in the 3500 block of North Lake Shore Drive, according to Fire Media Affairs spokesman Joe Roccasalva.
Her "deliberate and unreasonable actions" prompted the rescue response when she intentionally swam away from sight of any witnesses and people she was apparently with, who called out to her for about ten minutes before they called 911, according to a police report.
Chicago Fire Department units 687, 688, 224, a battalion chief, squad FDG 579, ambulances 52 and 56, a Fire Department Marine Unit, Police Marine Unit 1, Town Hall District beat cars 2399, 2310r and 2331r and a Chicago Fire Department helicopter unit also repeatedly called out to Adam, who continued to intentionally fail to announce her location and safety, the report said.
Personnel from the police Marine Unit finally found her in the water "concealing herself" between a boat and the dock, according to the report. She was arrested at 10:55 p.m. near the 3500 block of North Lake Shore Drive, police said.
Crews got her out of the water and took her to Saint Joseph Hospital for observation, according to Roccasalva.
She is expected in court for the misdemeanor charge on Sept. 2, police said.
In a separate boating accident, a 34-year-old Rogers Park man is being questioned after a man fell off a boat and was left in "extremely critical condition'' police said.
The man being questioned allegedly told police he was on the boat when he got into a fight with the man who fell in Saturday afternoon in the 800 block of North Lake Shore Drive. The 34-year-old man showed "visible marks'' that were consistent with being in a fight. He has not been charged with anything Sunday morning.
Just before 5 p.m., the police Marine Unit responded to the North Lake Shore Drive address, where divers pulled a male from Lake Michigan, police News Affairs Sgt. Antoinette Ursitti said.
The 30-year-old man was put on a fire department boat and taken to the 1600 block of North Lake Shore Drive, where paramedics took him by ambulance to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in "very critical condition," Roccasalva said.
The man apparently fell out of a boat, Roccasalva said.
