Cops At The Donut Shop? It's No Joke, It's A Fundraiser
CHICAGO (CBS) -- It's an easy stereotype: cops at the donut shop. But it's not everyday you'll see a group of police officers standing on the roof of a Dunkin' Donuts.
WBBM Newsradio's Dave Berner reports it's an annual tradition to raise money for charity.
The 12th annual Cop On Top fundraiser for Special Olympics Illinois features police officers hanging out all day on the roofs of local Dunkin' Donuts stores.
In Glenview, officers were taking turns – two at a time – having fun with the stereotype of the cop at the donut shop.
"I had one guy, he wanted to throw donuts up to me. I wouldn't suggest that," said Glenview patrol officer Joe Curtis, who sits on the roof every year.
Officer John Good said it's the one time people can get away with joking about cops and donuts.
"We're not going to arrest them," he said.
More than 170 towns in Illinois were taking part in the fundraiser on Friday. Last year, they raised more than $330,000 across the state.
"It's a great, great event. I mean, what better?" Good said. "The analogy, we get a lot of humor out of it. We get a lot of laughter."
