Cops Allege Ex-Mayor Rigged Dolton Exams
DOLTON, Ill. (STMW) - Nine Dolton cops filed a federal lawsuit Wednesday claiming they were passed over for promotion because the late Mayor William Shaw rigged the results of a 2007 sergeant's exam in favor of two other officers.
The lawsuit said Robert Fox scored 63 and Curtis Rempson scored 60 on the written test based on results Resource Management Associates provided to the south suburb. The passing score was 70.
Shaw, who died in November 2008, secretly ordered village officials to add 20 points to the scores of Fox and Rempson, making them the No. 1 and No. 3 testers, the lawsuit said.
"I don't know what they're talking about," Fox said. Dolton Mayor Ronnie Lewis declined to comment.
According to the lawsuit, which seeks $500,000 in damages, eight of the officers were never promoted to sergeant even though their scores were higher.
A ninth officer became sergeant a year later. But Fox and Rempson were immediately promoted to sergeant, and Fox became chief in early 2008.
In May, Fox left Dolton to become chief of investigations for the Cook County medical examiner.
Rempson could not be reached for comment. He was promoted to training coordinator in Dolton in August, the lawsuit said.
