COPA investigates officer-involved shooting on Chicago's West Side
CHICAGO (CBS) — The Civilian Office of Police Accountability, or COPA, is investigating an officer-involved shooting in Chicago's Humboldt Park neighborhood.
Chicago police said just before 9 p.m. Saturday, officers assigned to the 25th district approached to conduct a street stop investigation of two people in the alley in the 3800 block of West North Avenue.
As officers approached, one of the people fled on foot, and officers gave chase.
During the foot pursuit, the offender was seen running with a handgun and attempted to throw it away but was unsuccessful. The offender then picked up the handgun, at which time one of the officers discharged his weapon, striking the offender multiple times.
Officers immediately rendered aid, and the person was placed into custody and transported to Stroger Hospital in good condition.
A handgun was recovered on the scene.
COPA is investigating the specifics of this incident, including the comprehensive use of force investigation, with the full cooperation of the Chicago Police Department.
The Officer(s) involved will be placed on routine administrative duties for 30 days.
