Chicago police shoot, injure suspect who shot at officers, hit ambulance
CHICAGO (CBS) — Chicago police shot and critically injured a man who allegedly shot at police officers on the city's North Side Saturday morning.
Police were called around 9:36 a.m. to the 2600 block of West Farwell Avenue for a report of a person having been shot, according to Chicago police.
Paramedics were attending to a 39-year-old man who had been shot in his shoulder when an unknown suspect shot a gun toward responding officers and struck a Chicago Fire Department ambulance.
Officers returned fire and hit the suspect. Police recovered a weapon at the scene.
No Chicago police officers or fire personnel were injured during the incident.
Neighbors who live near the scene of the shooting described a confusing, concerning and dangerous situation.
"I heard in the distance just pop, pop, pop, pop, and I had never heard a gunshot before, at least not from my house," said one neighbor.
Police said witnesses even rushed to help.
The Civilian Office of Police Accountability said they're investigating the shooting. The officers involved in the shooting will be placed on routine administrative duties for at least 30 days.
