Cop Stops Speeding Car In South Elgin, Finds Passenger Shot
SOUTH ELGIN, Ill. (STMW) -- A police officer pulled over the driver of a car driving with its brights on and speeding early Sunday morning to discover the front-seat passenger had been shot. The victim was later taken to Presence Saint Joseph Hospital in Elgin for his injury, police said.
According to South Elgin police, an officer saw the car driving northbound on Route 31 (LaFox Street) at about 12:01 a.m. driving with its brights on, and passing the officer at 71 mph in a 30 mph zone. The officer followed the vehicle to a restaurant parking lot at Route 31 and State Street, adjacent to the South Elgin Fire Department, where the car stopped. The driver got out and told police that his passenger — his son — had been shot.
The victim, a man in his early 20s, got out of the car holding a blood-soaked shirt and with a gunshot wound to his middle-left chest, police said. The victim had an exit wound in his low back.
The victim was treated by South Elgin and Countryside Fire Department paramedics, and later taken to the hospital.
The victim's father told police the shooting was accidental, and happened at their home on the 1100 block of Woodcliff Drive, in unincorporated Kane County.
According to the Kane County Sheriff's Office, two brothers in their 20s were handling a revolver in their home when it accidentally went off, shooting one of them in the abdomen. He was treated for non life-threatening injuries.
The victim told police that he did not know who shot him, officials said.
