CHICAGO (CBS) -- A Chicago police officer shot a man suspected in at least a dozen robberies at sandwich shops and convenience stores, following a chase on the North Side overnight.
CBS 2's Susanna Song reports the robber held up a Subway sandwich shop on State Street on the Near North Side as the store was closing shortly before midnight Tuesday night.
After robbing the Subway, he jumped into an SUV and sped away, until police caught up with him a couple miles away, along the dividing line between the Bucktown and Wicker Park neighborhoods.
Dozens of police officers converged on the busy "six corners" intersection of Milwaukee, Damen, and North avenues, where the SUV crashed into a parked car as police were giving chase.
Police said the suspect threw the SUV into reverse, hit a squad car, then shifted gears again, and tried to run over an officer who was standing in the street.
Fearing for his life, that officer opened fire, hitting the suspect.
The suspect was taken to a local hospital, where he was treated, and released into police custody.
Detectives believe the suspect is tied to more than a dozen holdups at other eateries and convenience stores since January.
On Monday, the suspect allegedly robbed the Subway shop at 66 E. Washington St., next door to the Chicago Cultural Center.
"we were really scared, all my employees," said Raheela Khoja, the store manager. " we are happy police got him
Surveillance video from the Feb. 9 robbery of another Subway in Greektown shows the robber casually walking up to the counter, holding a gun. The employee behind the counter jumped back, then handed over about $300 in cash.
Police and the Independent Police Review Authority were investigating. Charges against the suspect were pending Wednesday morning.
