Cop Shoots Person Wielding Handgun Near Altgeld Gardens
CHICAGO (STMW) -- A police officer shot a person in his foot after he allegedly pointed a semi-automatic handgun at him and his partner Sunday night in near the Altgeld Gardens public housing development on the Far South Side, police said.
Two Calumet District officers were on patrol when they saw a male standing along a fence about 8:50 p.m. in the 13100 block of South Langley Avenue, said Fraternal Order of Police spokesman Pat Camden.
The male, whose age was not immediately available, began walking away from the officers, who split up and followed him into an enclosed area with dumpsters, Camden said.
The officers could not see the male, Camden said, but they allegedly saw a TEC-9 handgun being raised and lowered in air.
One of officers then fired his gun at the male, who was hit in the foot, according to a statement from police News Affairs.
"He was concerned his partner was about to be shot," Camden said.
Paramedics took the male to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, Camden said. His condition was not immediately known.
Police recovered a weapon at the scene, police News Affairs said, and no officers were injured in the shooting.
A spokesman for the city's Independent Police Review Authority, which probes police-involved shootings, said investigators were at the scene collecting details.
