Cop Shoots, Kills Knife-Wielding Man In Bridgeport
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A Chicago police officer shot and killed a man early Friday in Bridgeport, after he allegedly came at officers with two knives.
CBS 2's Courtney Gousman reports the officers were responding to a domestic disturbance in the 3200 block of South Halsted Street around 1 a.m.
When they arrived at the second-floor apartment, a man was standing over his battered girlfriend, and was holding two knives, police said. Chicago Fraternal Order of Police spokesman Pat Camden said one of the knives was a large butcher knife.
Camden said the officers told the man three times to put the knives down, but he refused, and then lunged at one of the officers, who shot and killed the man.
The 44-year-old man, identified as Felix Valdez, was pronounced dead at the scene.
No one else was injured in the shooting, but Camden said the two officers who responded to the incident were shaken up, and were taken to the hospital as a precaution.
A neighbor, who didn't want to reveal her identity, said the couple was known for their loud and frequent arguments. She said she heard a commotion from their apartment about an hour before police were called to the building.
Camden said officers had been called to the apartment in the past for domestic incidents.
The Independent Police Review Authority was investigating.
