Cop, Fireman Hit By Vehicles While Directing Traffic
CHICAGO (STMW) - Two separate vehicles struck a Chicago Police officer and firefighter who were directing traffic at the scene of gas leak Saturday afternoon in the Far Southwest Side Mount Greenwood neighborhood.
Both men are in good condition and the crashes were not hit-and-runs, according to Fire Media Affairs spokesman Joe Roccasalva.
A small gas leak occurred about 1:15 p.m. in the 10400 block of South Pulaski Road, causing Level I Hazardous materials response. On the scene of it, the firefighter and officer were trying to direct traffic when separate vehicles struck them, said Roccasalva.
Police News Affairs Officer Darryl Baety said the two were hit about 1:20 p.m.
The firefighter was taken to Metro South Medical Center in Blue Island while the officer was taken to Little Company of Mary Hospital and Health Care Centers in Evergreen Park. Both were in good condition, said Roccasalva.
Baety, who also said they were in good condition, did not immediately know if citations were written.
The Hazmat was secured about 2 p.m. and no other injuries occurred, said Roccasalva.
