Cop Scheduled For Court In Fatal Shooting Spree

JOLIET, Ill. (STMW) - A south suburban police officer is being held on $2.5 million bond in connection with the two-state shooting spree that left one man dead and two others wounded.
As of Saturday afternoon, Brian Dorian is expected to appear in Will County Courthouse in Wheaton for a bond hearing Tuesday at 1:30 p.m., according to Will County Sheriff's spokesman Pat Barry.
Dorian, 37, of Crete, a Lynwood police officer on medical leave, was arrested early Friday on a first-degree murder warrant and booked into Will County Jail. The arrest happened about 1 a.m. at a home in Lynwood, Lake County, Ind. Police Chief Marco Kuyachich said.
Though police received several tips, Kuyachich said a traffic stop made by an Indiana State Police officer led to a break in the case. He said officers stopped every truck that matched the description of the suspect's truck.
"At each stop that we made, we identified the individuals who were occupying the vehicles," Kuyachich said. "It led us to further look into it."
Lynwood Police Deputy Chief Greg Szymanski said Dorian has been with the department since 2005 but that he has been on medical leave for a shoulder injury since October 2009.
Lynwood police found Dorian's truck in the village Friday morning after they got a tip. Szymanski would not reveal the location where the truck was found, but said he believed Dorian already was in custody at that time.
The shooting spree began about 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at a house being renovated near Beecher and about 40 minutes later at a farmhouse near Lowell, Ind.
Killed in the shooting spree was Rolando Alonso, 45, of Hammond, Ind., a father of six children and four stepchildren. Joshua Garza, 19, also of Hammond, was in critical condition in Christ Advocate Hospital in Oak Lawn. Both men worked for Rich Construction based in Dyer, Ind.
Lowell farmer Keith Dahl, the third victim of the shooting spree, was in fair condition Friday at Saint Anthony Medical Center in Crown Point.
Rich Construction Co. announced Friday a trust account has been set up for Alonso's family. Donations can be made at any Chase Bank branch by designating the money for the Rolando Alonso Trust Donation Account, Account No. 27-685221.
Will County Sheriff Paul Kaupas and Lake County Sheriff Roy Dominguez formed a joint task force Thursday and called on residents to help find the suspect. Dominguez said the killer's movements and actions indicated he's familiar with the area.
Dorian was charged in January 2008 with speeding in a fatal crash that claimed the life of 17-year-old Dylan Drapeau in June 2006. Drapeau's family and friends had pushed for a reckless homicide charge.
Just minutes from his Crete home, Drapeau was in his Ford Focus at I-394 and Richton Road when a speeding car driven by Dorian, who was off duty at the time, slammed into his car, killing him.
Dorian had no previous traffic citations before the crash. The Will County State's Attorney's Office said Illinois law did not allow for speeding to be the sole factor in a reckless homicide charge.
An Illinois State Police crash reconstruction report concluded Dorian was traveling between 83 mph and 100 mph -- well above the 55-mph speed limit -- at the time his GMC truck crashed into the's car.
The report faulted both drivers, stating that Dorian, then 33, was speeding, and Drapeau, though nearly or completely stopped, didn't yield to Dorian's right of way. Neither tested positive for alcohol or drugs.
