Cooper: 'The Inmates Don't Run The Asylum'
Jake Peavy's most recent injury raises a lot of questions. How big of a setback will this be? Were the White Sox rushing him back? Was Peavy rushing himself back? And that's just to name a few.
While it's probably too early to address most of these questions, what we do know is that it wasn't Peavy calling the shots, it was the doctors and trainers. And as discouraging as the injury is, it's only a matter of time until Peavy makes his return.
"First of all it was kind of amazing that he was doing what he was doing," White Sox pitching coach Don Cooper said on the Mully and Hanley Show. "From what I understand this is nothing that is completely out of the norm. He had a lat thing and now the shoulder is giving him a little bit of a problem, so we're going to strengthen that up and take the time now to fix him. The long range plan, in a perfect situation, we had him planned to start the first game of the playoffs, so we're going to backtrack from there...I guess the positive thing to think about is that he's going to be back, it's just a matter of how long this is going to take. And when we get him, hopefully he'll be strong the rest of the season and we'll reach that plan of him opening the playoffs.

If the doctors and the trainers said 'listen, he shouldn't be doing this,' then we wouldn't have been doing it. We're following a plan that's been laid out. And there's been a little kink in the plan, he's just not feeling good so we're going to nip it in the bud. You think Peavy is saying nip it in the bud? No. Listen, the inmates don't run the asylum."
