Convicted Felon Arrested, Charged In Double-Murder
CHICAGO (STMW) - A convicted felon who attempted to flee police was arrested and charged Saturday with murdering two people in a 2009 shooting in the Garfield Park neighborhood.
Kyjuanzi Harris, 22, was charged Saturday with two counts of first-degree murder and one count of misdemeanor possession of cannabis, according to a Chicago Police Department release.
Harris is accused of the May 21, 2009, murders of 19-year-old Bernadette Turner and 27-year-old Derrick Armstrong, authorities said.
Police said the victims were inside a parked car in the 3000 block of West Van Buren Street. About 9:40 p.m., a vehicle with Harris inside pulled up alongside the car and Harris opened fire.
Turner died at Mount Sinai Hospital, and Armstrong died at John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office. Autopsies determined both died of multiple gunshot wounds and both deaths were ruled homicides.
Harrison Area detectives gathered leads and determined Harris was involved in the shooting, according to the release. The Harrison Area Gang Investigations Section located him Friday in the 2900 block of West Polk Street and arrested him after a brief foot pursuit.
Harris, a convicted felon, is scheduled to appear in bond court Sunday, police said.
