CHICAGO (CBS) -- Two Chicago police officers were injured Wednesday while responding to a fatal shooting on the Little Village neighborhood, on the city's southwest side.
The shooting occurred at 1:13 p.m. Chicago Police News Affairs Officer Daniel O'Brien said a 22-year-old man was shot in the stomach. Witnesses told Central Area detectives that the victim was standing in an alley when a gold SUV drove by him and opened fire. The SUV then sped away.
Chicago Fire Department paramedics transported the victim to Mt. Sinai Hospital, but O'Brien said the man died within a short time.
Less than 15 minutes after the shooting occurred and just six blocks away, a police squad car was involved in an accident at Ogden and Kildare Avenues.
O'Brien said it is believed that the officers who were injured had been responding to the shooting.
Fire Department paramedics transported the officers to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County for evaluation. O'Brien had no word on the extent of their injuries.
About an hour later, a suspect from the shooting was spotted in west suburban Berwyn. Chicago police and Berwyn police were searching for the suspect south of Ogden Avenue, using police dogs and a helicopter.
Schools on the south end of Berwyn were briefly locked down, but later placed on controlled dismissal – meaning students would not be sent home until their parents arrived to pick them up.
O'Brien was unable to say early if the shooting was related to other recent violence in the area.
