Condo Residents Have Been Without Elevator Service, Lights In Common Areas For Days
Condo Woes
(CBS) -- No lights in the hallways or the stairwells and no elevator service. A lot of elderly residents have been facing those hardships in two Calumet City buildings for more than a week.
One resident who's lived at the Park of River Oaks condos the longest: 87-year-old Joyce Walker.
"We don't have no elevators working. The people over here, we have no lights," she says.
No lights in the common areas of, basically, one and a half buildings. Walker lives on the fifth floor.
If there were an emergency, it would be very difficult. She would have to walk a long distance to get to working elevators.
"You know what -- my condition with this pacemaker in my heart -- I cannot let this bother me. Because it takes a toll on me," Walker says.
Her caregiver, Yolanda Diggs, says she's been walking up a dark stairwell, using light from her phone.
"If I didn't care about my client, I would go find another client, because this is sad," she says.
The head of the condo association says if there is an emergency, the fire department is aware that the elevators are out.
ComEd says it will be at the building Friday morning. The condo association expects the hallway and stairwell lights to be back on tomorrow, but the elevators still won't be working.
