Company Selling Car-Repair Plans Subject Of Complaints
CHICAGO (CBS) -- They claim they were taken for a ride, that car repair plans they paid for didn't cover anything when trouble struck.
The complaints are here and across the country against a Missouri-based company. That state's attorney general even filed suit, and now the Better Business Bureau has a warning, CBS 2's Kristyn Hartman reports.
The company issued a statement to the Better Business Bureau saying it is a responsible company.
But before you buy a repair plan or service contract for your car, the bureau wants you to hear Joseph Thomas's story.
He regrets ever dealing with a firm called Stop Repair Bills, claiming they didn't live up to their name. He says he paid them $100 month for four months before his car had transmission trouble.
His contract led him to believe the repairs would be covered. So, off to the shop it went, where there were delays.
"When I asked the shop what was wrong with it, they said they didn't want to cover it because you're a new client and you only invested a few hundred," Thomas said.
"I was surprised because they said they'd cover these main things," he added.
Not this time, though – and apparently, not a lot of times.
About 200 complaints have been filed in the last year, and the company currently has an F rating with the Better Business Bureau.
The bureau's Steve Bernas says some people put thousands of dollars into Stop Repair Bills for no repair coverage when problems surfaced.
The company, which features smiling testimonials on its website, did not return phone calls seeking comment. It issued a statement to the bureau saying it responds to customer complaints in a timely manner.
As for Thomas, he got the cash he paid in to the company.
