Coming Thaw Will Keep Pothole Repair Crews Busy
CHICAGO (CBS) -- With temperatures expected to hit the 40s three of the next five days, city crews have begun gearing up to fill what will likely be a growing number of potholes.
WBBM Newsradio's Bernie Tafoya reports the city claims crews have filled 215,000 potholes so far this year. Last weekend, six extra crews were added to pothole repair duty.
The city also has started checking main streets that were repaved by private contractors last year, to see how they're holding up so far.
If any potholes have cropped up on those streets, the Chicago Department of Transportation will work with the contractors who paved them to repair the streets, or reimburse the city under existing warranties.
The city also has been working on a plan to resurface more streets this year, in hopes of reducing the number of potholes that must be filled next year.
