ComEd Worker Critically Injured In Suburbs
CRYSTAL LAKE, Ill. (STMW) - A utility worker was critically injured Tuesday afternoon when he was hit in the head by an object while working on a pole replacement project in northwest suburban Crystal Lake.
The Crystal Lake Fire Rescue Dept. responded about 1:40 p.m. to to the intersection of Crystal Lake Avenue and East Street and found a 53-year-old man suffering a "traumatic head injury," Lt. Kirk Kiermas said.
"It appeared that a piece of equipment or a piece of pole fell or swung down and struck him in the head," Kiermas said. The victim was on the ground at the time of the accident.
Paramedics attempted to stabilize the man, who was initially semi-conscious when the ambulance arrived, Kiermas said. A Flight for Life helicopter was called but he man was taken in critical condition by ambulance to Centegra Northern Illinois Medical Center in McHenry.
A ComEd spokeswoman confirmed that the victim was an employee, but had no further information available as of 5:45 p.m.
Kiermas said the utility is replacing poles in the area and the project entails moving utility lines from the old poles to the new.
