Colvin Will See Time At First Base
The Chicago Cubs' Tyler Colvin broke into the Major Leagues as an outfielder, but starting this spring he'll start to log some time at first base.
Colvin's name was tossed around over the offseason as a potential replacement for long time first baseman Derrek Lee. After the Cubs signed free agent Carlos Pena it was clear that Colvin would remain an outfielder, well at least as his primary position.
"He'll get some time," Cubs' manager Mike Quade said of Colvin playing first base. "[Jeff Baker] will get some time, and we'll take a look and make sure that we're protected should something happen."
With an already crowded outfield, Colvin will likely be the first man called on to fill in if Pena were to suffer an injury or just needs a day off.
"You'll see more than just pregame from him there," Quade said.
Colvin appeared in 135 games for the Cubs last season. He hit for a .254 batting average with 20 home runs, 56 RBI and a .816 OPS.
The Cubs' pitchers and catchers reported to spring training on Monday, and the rest of the team is scheduled to report on Friday, February 18.
