Collins On Northwestern Job: 'Everything I Was Looking For'
(CBS) Though new Northwestern basketball coach Chris Collins, currently an assistant coach for Duke, claims his focus right now is winning a National Championship with the Blue Devils, he called the Wildcats job "everything I was looking for."
Speaking at Thursday's NCAA tournament Sweet 16 news conference before the Blue Devils took on Michigan State, Collins refused to answer specific questions about his new job, but did offer this:
"I was always looking for the right fit," the Northbrook native said. "It's a great school, a great area, a great conference. An opportunity to build a program. I was very excited about that opportunity. … It's a great fit for me. It's a great fit for my family. Chicago is my home. It's a great school not only athletically but academically."
Even Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski said it was the right time for Collins to land a heading coaching gig.
"He's perfect for the job," Krzyzewski said. "Chris hasn't actively pursued a lot of jobs because he had a great job and loved being at Duke. We've loved working together. But Northwestern provides an opportunity to be at a great school, a private institution with an AD and president who are totally committed to building a great program and upholding the standards of their school."
