Cold Snap Coming This Week After Warm Weekend
CHICAGO (CBS) -- The temperature topped out at a balmy 70 degrees on Sunday, but you'll be needing a warm jacket again by the middle of the week.
CBS 2 Meteorologist Megan Glaros says we should expect a steep dropoff in the temperature Monday, although the mercury will still read above normal.
The high on Monday is expected to top out at 55 degrees Monday. The average high for this time of year is 50.
Scattered rain showers are expected in the early part of the day. In the early morning hours, rain was already falling south and west of the city, and thunderstorms were seen in parts of Central Illinois and Indiana.
But Glaros says in the Chicago area, only garden-variety showers will be seen, if any precipitation at all. But the low pressure system over the area means a chance of rain will remain.
As the day goes on, the cloud cover will dissipate. The overnight low is expected to drop to 40 degrees, with breezy conditions.
The high climbs to a pleasant 58 on Tuesday, but a cold front will come through, opening the door to much colder air by Wednesday.
The high Wednesday is a mere 41 degrees, with an overnight low of a winter coat-worthy 28.
On Sunday, blustery winds sent leaves and plastic bags flying into the air and left people's hair mussed and messy. The National Weather Service reported 56 mph gusts and 41 mph sustained winds at a measurement point three miles out into Lake Michigan.
But that likely wasn't much of a hardship for Chicagoans, given that the temperature came within 3 degrees of setting a record. The highest recorded temperature for Nov. 13 was 73 degrees in 1989, CBS 2 Meteorologist Mary Kay Kleist reported.
But you need not resign yourself to winter just yet. The forecast high for Sunday is back up at 60 degrees.
