Cold Exposure Cited In Two Separate Deaths Friday
CHICAGO (STMW) -- The deaths Friday of two men -- one in the South Side Kenwood neighborhood and another in northwest suburban Streamwood -- were due in part from exposure to the cold.
John H. King III was found early Friday in the 4700 block of South Lake Shore Drive and was pronounced dead at 6:35 a.m. Friday at the scene, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.
A Saturday autopsy determined King, 61, died from coronary atherosclerosis and hypothermia because of cold exposure and his death was ruled an accident, according to the medical examiner's office. Authorities said the man appeared to be homeless.
Friday afternoon, Jimmy Mendoza, 55, was found at 431 W. Irving Park Rd. in Streamwood, according to the medical examiner's office.
Mendoza, of 4858 S. Springfield Ave., was pronounced dead at 12:55 p.m. Friday, the medical examiner's office said.
An autopsy Saturday found he died of sepsis from bronchopneumonia and hypothermia due to cold exposure, and his death was an accident, the medical examiner's office said.
There have been at least eight cold-related deaths in the 2011-2012 winter season.
