Closing Arguments In Drew Peterson Trial Set To Begin Tuesday
JOLIET, Ill. (CBS) -- Jurors in the Drew Peterson murder trial will hear closing arguments after the Labor Day weekend and presumably begin deliberations soon after.
Will County prosecutors rested their case Thursday, and parties in the case are expected to work out jury instructions with Judge Edward Burmila Friday. That sets the stage for closing arguments to begin Tuesday, after Monday's holiday.
The jailed Peterson is accused of killing his third wife Kathleen Savio in 2004, a death that was originally ruled a bathtub drowning. Peterson's fourth wife, Stacy, disappeared in 2007, and the former Bolingbrook police sergeant is considered a suspect.
The end stages of the trial came closer Thursday after prosecutors concluded calling rebuttal witnesses. Celebrity pathologist Michael Baden testified the injuries on Savio's body could not have resulted from a fatal slip and fall in this bathtub.
"They would have to be due to multiple falls," he said.
Defense attorneys tried to question Baden's credibility, saying he was hired by Fox News to do the autopsy for a TV program. More importantly, they say Baden's testimony does not link Drew Peterson to any crime.
But a spokesperson for Stacy Peterson's family disagrees. Pamela Bosco say says the pictures of wounds to the clavicle region which were shown to the jury Thursday, combined with numerous other injuries, add up to a telltale example of a brutal murder.
"Drew held her down and drowned her," Bosco said.
If Drew Peterson is worried about the days testimony, his lawyers weren't admitting it.
