Clinton In Town To Help Quinn, Giannoulias

UPDATED: 10/26/2010 3:30 p.m.

CHICAGO (CBS) - President Bill Clinton blew into town this windy Tuesday morning to give Democrats a boost in tight races for U.S. Senate and governor.

Clinton spoke for 50 minutes at a rally at the Palmer House Hilton, 17 E. Monroe St.

He is campaigning for Democrat Alexi Giannoulias, who is seeking President Barack Obama's former U.S. Senate seat, and Gov. Pat Quinn, who is fighting to keep his job.

The former president wasted no time taking a swipe at Giannoulias' opponent, Mark Kirk, saying the congressman voted to increase the federal deficit.

"He deliberately voted to double the debt of the country," Clinton said.

Before the event, Quinn lauded the former president's economic policies, saying Clinton focused on job creation, while the nation suffered massive unemployment under President Bush.

"We need to hear how to put the economy back together again," Quinn said

President Obama is also expected to pay a campaign visit to Chicago sometime before the election Tuesday.

Kirk is getting an assist in the razor-tight Senate race from two groups GOP strategist Karl Rove helped form. Several ads blast Giannoulias' record at his family-owned, and now failed, Broadway bank.

Bill Brady, a state senator from Bloomington, is getting help in the governor's race from Republican governors around the country.
