City To Host Gun Turn-In Event

CHICAGO (CBS) -- The city of Chicago wants to get guns off the street, and is asking people to turn them in on their own.

WBBM Newsradio's Bernie Tafoya reports the city's gun turn-in events over the past six years have netted 23,000 weapons, according to the city.

The next gun turn-in will be held on Saturday, June 23, at nearly two dozen churches throughout the city.

Anyone will be able to turn in a gun – no questions asked – and get a $100 MasterCard gift card. Anyone who turns in a BB gun or replica gun will get a $10 gift card.

The most successful gun turn-in event the city held was five years ago, when 6,700 guns were turned in on one day.

This year's event is part of the "Don't Kill A Dream, Save A Life" ad campaign, which has run on local TV and radio stations, and on CTA bus shelters.
