City Moves To Fix West Pullman Eyesore
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A woman in West Pullman says she's fed up with what she calls a health hazard and dumping ground in her community.
To make matters worse, the area is just two blocks from Edward White Elementary School, 1136 W. 122nd Street.
A toilet. Hundreds of broken windows. An old television. Discarded construction debris. Even rusted nails.
Aurelia Lovett Bey says a property at Peoria and 122nd in her West Pullman neighborhood is an eyesore.
"There's a school just two blocks away and the kids walk past here every day and one of those kids is going to get curious and come up in here and something is going to happen to them," said Lovett Bey. "Plus it's a hazard for the kids to come here every day.
"They need to take care of this right now."
In March, the City of Chicago Law Department filed a complaint against Coru 121 LLC and Landbank LLC, the owners of the garbage strewn properties.
Judy Frydland, a City of Chicago attorney, said: "It's really bad for the neighborhood. It causes rat harborage. It causes all kinds of health problems and it shouldn't be.
"So we're trying to serve the owners right now and bring them in to court, to get them to clean it up and to secure the property, so it stops."
"It's just pitiful," Lovett Bey said.
If the city's case against these owners goes to trial and the city wins, the owners would have to pay up to $2,700 for each day the property violated the city ordinance.
The city will be serving both owners with subpoenas to appear in court on July 10. CBS 2 was unable to reach the property owners.
