City Issues Weather Warning For Memorial Day Weekend
CHICAGO (STMW) - The City of Chicago is warning residents of warmer temperatures expected to move into the area for Memorial Day weekend -- including 90 degree temperatures Monday.
The National Weather Service is predicting a high of 71 degrees with a 40 percent chance of showers Saturday. By Sunday, temperatures will climb to 79 degrees with a 40 percent chance of thunderstorms. On Memorial Day, the weather service is expecting a sunny 91-degree day.
The heat index is expected to reach between 90 and 100 degrees Monday, according to a release from the city's Office of Emergency Management and Communication.
The city is urging residents to avoid going out in the head, especially during midday, drink lots of water and wear loose, light cotton clothing, the release said. It urges residents to avoid drinking alcoholic, coffee and cola beverages.
The city also urges people check on family members, friends and neighbors.
Additionally, the city is urging safe boating with the official opening of Chicago Park District beaches. Residents are reminded to use life jackets, do not operate a boat under the influence of drugs or alcohol and use a marine VHF radio because cell phone coverage can be spotty on the water, the release said.
