City Installed, Restriped 39 Miles Of Bike Lanes Last Year
CHICAGO (STMW) - The city says a total of 39 miles of on-street bike lanes were either installed or restriped last year.
The Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) installed or restriped the bike lanes over 52 different projects in 32 wards throughout the city. That includes 17 miles of new bike lanes; nine miles of restriped bike lanes; nine miles of new marked shared lanes; two miles of new protected bike lanes; one mile of new buffered bike lanes and one mile of restriped marked shared lanes, the department said in a release.
Last year also marked the construction of the first protected bike lane, first buffered lane, first bike boxes and first bike-friendly intersection designs, the release said.
CDOT also installed its first on-street bike parking corral in the Wicker Park neighborhood.
CDOT Commissioner Gabe Klein said the projects proved protected bike lanes can work in Chicago and "reaffirmed Mayor Emanuel's commitment to installing 100 miles of protected bike lanes in his first term in office."
Next up are protected bike lanes on Elston Avenue, the west side boulevards and other locations throughout Chicago.
