City Council Bans Sale Of Bumper Pads For Cribs
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Bumper pads for baby cribs will be banned for retail sale in Chicago.
The measure sailed through the full council by a vote of 49-1.
Ald. George Cardenas, who sponsored the measure, says too many infant deaths have been linked to the crib pads.
Youngsters have suffocated when they rolled up against the crib pads but didn't have the strength to roll away.
The ban goes into effect on Oct. 8
Parents and caregivers aren't forbidden from owning bumper pads. Nor is there any provision for fines or punishment.
In fact, this would make Chicago the first in the United States to enact a bumper pad ban.
