City Breaks Ground On Pullman Community Center

(CBS) -- A ground-breaking ceremony was held Saturday in the Pullman neighborhood, on Chicago's Far South Side for a $15 million, 140,000 square foot community center that will provide indoor practice facilities for multiple sports.

The Pullman Community Center, according to Alderman Anthony Beale, will help to level the playing field for kids who will have year-round facilities.

"We're going to play baseball; we're going to play football; we're going to play soccer; we're going to play lacrosse; we're going to play tennis; we're going to play golf," Beale said.

The state kicked in $5 million.

"138,000 square feet," said Governor Pat Quinn. "This is not piddly diddly, this is really big."

The NFL and Chicago Neighborhood Initiatives are also financing the project to be built on land donated by US Bank.

Sheriff Tom Dart used to have an impound yard there.

"When you give kids constructive things to do they will do that," Dart said. "They are not in some innate way attracted to these other things...."

Completion is expected in about a year.
