Cinema Chain May Give Thumbs-Up To Texting During Films
(CBS) -- If one cinema chain executive gets his way, movies could become the new hot spot for texting.
CBS 2's Derrick Blakley report on whether texting could be a turn off.
At movie theaters, texting has traditionally been strictly verboten.
But AMC's top executive says it may be time to change.
"You can't tell a 22-year-old to turn off their cellphone. That's not how they live their life,"
CEO Adam Aaron tells trade publication Variety.
Local moviegoers say texting would be a major turn-off.
"People act like these are their lifeline. You can't do without it for two hours? That's ridiculous," moviegoer Sherry Hildebrandt says.
The problem, as moviegoers know all too well, is the distracting light that cellphones emit while texting.
But AMC says allowing texting in some theaters might attract more millennials.
"Millennials are so into texting. I think a different theater for them might be OK," says moviegoer Janet MacPhail.
An AMC spokesperson says there's no specific timetable for testing out texting and it may not happen at all.
