UPDATED 03/09/12 8:30 p.m.
CICERO, Ill. (CBS)-- An armed man shot himself in the chest Friday afternoon after barricading himself and causing the lockdown of a Cicero school.
Andrew Jeremy McCline, 21, of Chicago, complained to police that he was despondent over the death of his father, among other personal and legal problems, Cicero authorities said. He shot himself in the chest around 4:30 p.m. and was taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital in critical condition.
An elementary school in Cicero was placed on lockdown as a result of the barricade situation.
Police in Cicero locked down Goodwin Elementary School, 2625 S. Austin Blvd., according to Cicero town spokesman Ray Hanania. Morton East High School, a short distance away at 2423 S. Austin Blvd., was also locked down.
Hanania said police did not want the children to leave the school and come running to the scene.
