Church, Scouting Community Come Together For Leader In Need
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A community the Portage Park neighborhood is coming together for a friend in need.
"He's really given a lot to the community, and we feel this is a great opportunity for the community to give back to him," said Garvey Madden.
As WBBM Newsradio's Regine Schlesinger reports, Madden says his friend, Mike Garcia, has been an active member of St. Pascal Church, and a beloved Boy Scout leader for many years.
He has served as Cub Master of Cub Scout Pack 3815, and Scout leader of Boy Scout Troop 815.
But last summer, Garcia lost his job as an architect, and around Thanksgiving, he was diagnosed with stage 4 stomach cancer. He is now undergoing extensive chemotherapy.
"He's not only fighting cancer, but also covering COBRA costs and whatnot to keep he and his family well and safe during this time," Madden said.
So this Sunday morning, Garcia's scouting and church community will host a pancake breakfast at St. Pascal's Heimsath Hall, 6143 W. Irving Park Rd. The public is welcome.
They say they have to raise at least $10,000.
