Christmas Eve No Holiday Break For Post Office Letter Carriers
(CBS) -- Not only is Christmas Eve not a holiday for many people, but for some it is a busy day. Such is the case for the post office.
CBS 2's Pamela Jones reports this soggy Christmas Eve, U.S. Postal letter carriers were still sloshing door to door to make the holiday merrier, people like 33-year veteran Eugene Robinson.
"I'm enjoying it compared to last year when we had all that snow," said Robinson. "We had enough for three years last year, so this is a nice break."
His route through Schererville, Indiana takes him to over 600 stops, each with people counting on getting their last minute parcels and packages delivered in time for Christmas Day.
"You get that package there, especially when you get it there before they expect it, then they're really happy," he said.
He says all the mailbox stuffing gets tougher when temperatures drop and weather worsens. But USPS still logged some 28 million packages delivered nationwide on Monday alone.
The reason postal carriers push harder awaits with each smiling child waiting for something from the North Pole. Robinson delivered a pair of letters from Santa this Christmas Eve.
"They sent their letters out a couple of days ago and Santa wrote them back," Robinson said. "I delivered them today for Santa, so that was probably the best part of my day."
