Chilly Conditions For Afternoon, 30s For Some Overnight
CHICAGO (CBS) -- It's still technically summer for a few more days, but temperatures on Tuesday are a far cry even from the conditions Chicago saw back in March around St. Patrick's Day.
You might have been sorry if you didn't put on a sweater or jacket in the morning. As of 11:20 a.m., it was only 57 at O'Hare International Airport; 58 at Midway Airport, Joliet and Aurora; 56 at Waukegan; and 59 at Gary and Valparaiso, Ind.
Skies were clear with a few puffy cumulus clouds in Chicago during the midday hours, but some showers were hitting the west coast of Michigan across the lake, where more cloud cover was evident in the distance. CBS 2 Meteorologist Megan Glaros says some lake-effect showers are still a possibility for the Chicago area Tuesday afternoon.
Meanwhile, the temperatures will top out at only 62 degrees, with a stiff breeze caused by the proximity of a high pressure system over Lake Huron to the northeast, over a low pressure system, along the Mississippi River near the Iowa-Missouri state line to the southwest.
The northwest wind is sending air from Canada that has cut the temperatures.
Overnight, the official record low is not expected to drop below the 40 degrees set in 1991, at least not at the official measuring station at O'Hare International Airport. The low at O'Hare is expected to drop to 44, and at Midway 43.
But In Waukegan and Gary, the low is expected to bottom out at 39, and in DeKalb, you may need a winter coat and hat as the low drops to one degree above freezing – 33 degrees.
The high for Wednesday climbs to 69, Thursday to 70, Friday back down to 64, Saturday 65, Sunday 66, and next Monday 68.
