Children Hurt On Playground At Lyons School

LYONS (CBS) -- Eight students from a Lyons elementary school were rushed to the hospital this afternoon after a mishap on the school playground.
Supt. Mike Warren tells Newsradio 780 several fifth graders at Robinson Elementary were on an inflatable slide when it tipped, dropping the kids to the ground.
He says the slide was about 15 feet tall and the students landed on the asphalt playground. The slide was at the school as part of an "end of the school year" event.
Lyons police and fire officials arrived about five minutes later to discover an inflatable slide that was flipped over on its side on the north side of the school in a paved lot, according to a Lyons police release. It appeared that children were on the stairs and on top of the slide when it toppled over.
Eight students suffered scrapes and bruises and were taken to area hospitals. The most seriously injured student appeared to have a head injury. Warner says the injuries are not life threatening but required medical attention.
One student was bleeding from the head and dizzy when he was taken to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, Warner said.
Seven other fifth-graders were also hospitalized, Warner said. The students were taken with minor injuries to area hospitals.
"They had various degree of scrapes and bumps, and they were scared and upset,'' said Warner. They were taken to either MacNeal Hospital or to Loyola.
He says he doesn't know what caused the slide to tip.
"I'm sure we will be talking to the company it was rented from to verify how it was set up,'' he said.
Police are now investigating. Students are being allowed to go home if parents want to come and pick them up.
