Baby Killed In Dan Ryan Crash
CHICAGO (STMW) -- A baby was killed and three other children were critically injured in a two-vehicle crash that hurt two others and shut down all outbound lanes of the Dan Ryan Expressway on the South Side Monday evening.
The accident happened about 6:45 p.m. on the outbound Dan Ryan Expressway near 75th Street, according to Illinois State Police District Chicago. All outbound lanes were shut down as crews responded and were expected to be shuttered for at least two hours.
An EMS Plan 1 was called to the two-vehicle crash, sending at least five ambulances to the scene, Fire Media Affairs Dir. Larry Langford said.
One of the vehicles hit a guard rail and flipped over, ejecting passengers, Langford told CBS 2. The kids in the accident were restrained in the car, state police said.
A baby was dead at the scene, while three other children were taken to Comer Children's Hospital in critical condition, Langford said. One adult was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, while another was taken to John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County, both in critical condition, he said.
Comer Children's Hospital spokesman Rob Mitchum said the hospitalized children are a 6-year-old boy, who was listed in critical condition, as well as two girls, a 3-year-old and 4-year-old. Mitchum said the girls were in good condition as of 7:30 p.m.
He confirmed the child found dead at the scene was less than 1 year of age.
The Cook County Medical Examiner's office could not yet confirm the baby's death at 7:45 p.m.
