Child Injured In Crash With Drunk, High Driver
PORTAGE, Ind. (STMW) - An Indiana man was charged with fleeing from law enforcement and operating a vehicle while intoxicated in connection with a crash that injured an 11-year-old boy.
Sergio Gonzalez, 40, of Portage, was allegedly drunk and had cocaine in his system when he rear-ended another vehicle on 10th Street in Hobart at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, police said.
The other driver, whose 11-year-old son complained of back pain after the crash, said Gonzalez stopped initially but fled once he heard police had been called.
Although police caught up to his maroon 2002 Ford Windstar van, Gonzalez did not stop until he pulled into his own driveway, in the 5300 block of Tulip Avenue in Portage.
Portage police arrested Gonzalez on charges of fleeing law enforcement with a vehicle, a felony; operating while intoxicated and driving with a suspended license. He may face additional charges by Hobart police.
