The fire happened just before 2 p.m. at 7006 S. Dorchester Ave., according to Fire Media Affairs Chief Kevin MacGregor. Firefighters from Tower Ladder 34 located the 3-year-old child and elderly woman in a second-floor hallway, both unconscious, MacGregor said.
Family members identified the young victim as Deavion Arnold, and the elderly woman as his great-grandmother.
The child, suffering from smoke inhalation, went into cardiac arrest and was taken to the University of Chicago Comer Children's Hospital, and later pronounced dead, MacGregor said. The great-grandmother was taken in serious condition to the University of Chicago Hospitals.
It was one of two fatal fires on the South Side Monday afternoon. An elderly woman was killed in a blaze at 5713 S. Damen about the same time as the fire on Dorchester.
