"And I am just so grateful that everyone buys in to the idea that people matter and community matters and it is very difficult to tell young black students that they matter," said Monroe.
Volunteers took part in art projects and workshops with students, part of the National Day of Service to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King.
Governor Quinn spoke to the volunteers.
"Anything we can do today or any day to make this a better place, that is really what I think it is all about," said Quinn.
About 1,500 people took part in Chicago Cares Day of Service activities today.
