Chicagoans Continue Work To Build Children's Hospital In Haiti

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A group of Chicagoans trying to help recovery efforts in Haiti, two years after the devastating earthquake, gathered at Children's Memorial Hospital Thursday to discuss the on-going effort.

As WBBM Newsradio's Mike Krauser reports, the volunteers call themselves Team Haiti – doctors, builders, architects and relief workers pitching in together to build a new children's hospital in Haiti.

"So many generous organizations and people in our great city of Chicago have offered helping hand over the last two years, and it's been critically important. However, as you might guess, there is still a tremendous amount of work that is yet to be done," said Children's Memorial Hospital chief executive officer Patrick Magoon.

Chuck Andrews of International Child Care USA calls the aftermath of the earthquake "both a devastating situation and an opportunity."

Bob Gallo, of Powers Construction, says the people of Haiti are looking for advancement, not mere charity.

"They need help. They want help. They want support. They don't want handouts. They want education. They want expertise," Gallo said.

The Team Haiti members are making an intellectual investment, and now they need cash – about $35 million.
