Chicago Woman Shoots Invader
CHICAGO (STMW) -- A woman fatally shot a person who broke into her South Chicago neighborhood home Monday morning, police said.
The woman heard a window break in the basement of her home in the 8200 block of South Kingston Avenue about 10 a.m. and retrieved a handgun, police News Affairs Officer Darryl Baety said.
She then went to the basement and confronted the man, who was armed with a tire iron, Baety said. She then fired the gun and killed the home invader, police said.
Vincent Fleming, 20, of 357 W. 42nd St., was pronounced dead at 10:36 a.m. at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.
The woman was not injured, police said. It was not immediately known if the handgun was registered or if she faces criminal charges.
Chicago last year adopted strict handgun-ownership standards after the U.S. Supreme Court struck down the city's ban on guns in the home.
