Chicago's own Wendy and DB nominated for top award for children's album
CHICAGO (CBS) – There was some homegrown talent the Grammy's didn't have time to showcase on Sunday night, but a Chicago duo, Wendy and DB, definitely deserve the spotlight.
They were Grammy-nominated for the Best Children's Album.
CBS 2 anchor Joe Donlon had a chance to catch up with the talented pair at Wendy's north suburban home as the excitement was really taking hold.
Donlon: "Has it sunk in yet?"
DB: "Yeah it's sunk in – it's sinking. Actually, it's rising."
Wendy Morgan and Darryl Boggs, known in the music world as Wendy and DB, have been collaborating on children's music for a decade. When their fifth album "Into the Little Blue House" garnered their first Grammy nomination, they knew they had something special.
"We went to the blues players of Chicago," DB said. "We want them to play on this album. I said I want an authentic blues vibe."
"What can we do here from Chicago?" Wendy said. "What do people know Chicago for? What do they know us for?"
"We're the world capitol of blues," DB added.
DB: "You don't think of blues when you think of children's music, right? I mean the blues is hard times."
Wendy: "That was the interesting part when writing the lyrics, was how? But not all the lyrics in the blues are sad. They're not. There's really upbeat words and it's kind of like there's so much joy in blues.
"It's about the feels and some of the history of how that part of the blues came about."
Donlon: "It's a goosebump album. It really is. I mean, every song make you feel good!"
DB: "Yeah! That's the hope."
Wendy: "That was the goal!"
"So we get the lucky job of writing songs for children. Children are the hope in our world. Children are where the hope is right now, OK, and we can't let them down."
And the duo's title song, "Little Blue House," is full of life lessons.
Donlon: "It's a song about inclusion, togetherness, love. Those are just some of the messages I picked up."
DB: "Right, exactly. These are just habits. For a lot of us, our parents taught us these things. We learned from school. If we would just learn these, we'd just have a better world."
Wendy: "That we can by loving each other and by really putting out our best. We don't have to keep fighting all we see is fighting and the kids are watching. They see everything."
Donlon: "What would it mean if you win this?"
DB: "For me, it's very simple. It would be a culmination of a wonderful career for me, another milestone. I can take a look and say, man you did something really good here."
Wendy: "I'd just be so grateful for the blues community, that we have lifted up a whole community. That's the beauty here.
"We want to use the platform for good, for the greater good, just like what is says in 'Little Blue House.' 'Love is planted. Love is grown.'"
The pair did not win but said it was a highlight seeing their names on the screen during their category.
