6 killed, 29 hurt in Chicago weekend shootings, police say
CHICAGO (CBS) — At least six people were killed, and 29 others were wounded in Chicago weekend shootings, according to Chicago police.
The ages of the victims range from 15 to 63.
In the first shooting of the weekend, around 5:23 p.m. Friday, A 63-year-old man was shot in front of a home in the 7800 block of South Emerald Avenue.
Police said officers responded to the scene of a gunshot detection technology alert and found the victim, who someone inside a silver vehicle had shot.
The victim was struck in the leg and taken to St. Benard Hospital in serious condition.
The first homicide of the week involved a 42-year-old man who died after fighting over a gun with a 33-year-old man around 8:13 p.m. in the 5500 block of South Spaulding Avenue.
The two were arguing when one of them pulled out a gun. The men began to fight over the gun when both were shot multiple times, according to police.
Both were treated by fire crews and taken to Christ Hospital, where the 42-year-old died, and the 33-year-old was listed in critical condition.

Shootings from Friday
- At 6:22 p.m. in the 8100 block of South Drexel Boulevard, preliminary reports say a 39-year-old man was inside a residential building and was approached by two unknown males. One of the males pulled out a firearm and shot at the victim. The victim was struck in the arm and was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in serious condition.
- At 8:42 p.m. in the 1200 block of West Touhy Avenue, an 18-year-old man was standing in the parking lot of a park when an unknown male approached, pulled out a handgun, and shot at the victim. The victim was hit in the right side of his torso and was taken to St Francis Hospital by fire crews in fair condition.
- At 10:48 p.m. in the 6000 block of South Princeton Avenue, three men were inside a parked vehicle when two unknown people approached and fired multiple shots into the vehicle. A 27-year-old was struck in the right leg and was taken to St Bernard Hospital in good condition. A 35-year-old was shot in the rear and right foot and taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in good condition. A 39-year-old suffered a gunshot wound to his right thigh and was also taken to U of C in good condition.
- At 11:22 p.m. in the 2400 block of South Trumbull Avenue, police responded to a person shot and found a 16-year-old boy outside on the ground. The victim suffered a gunshot wound to his lower back and was taken to Mt. Sinai in critical condition and later died. A witness told officers that they saw five males fleeing the scene after the shooting.
- At 11:30 p.m. in the 1300 block of South Albany Avenue, a 47-year-old woman was sitting outside when someone unknown fired shots in the area and struck her. The victim was hit twice in the lower left knee and was taken to Mt Sinai Hospital in good condition.
Shootings from Saturday
- At 11:06 a.m. in the 5700 block of South Prairie Avenue, a 29-year-old man was outside when two unknown people got out from a black-in-color SUV and began to fire shots in the victim's direction. The victim suffered gunshot wounds to his body and was taken to U of C, where he died.
- At 7:33 p.m. in the 8500 block of South Manistee Avenue, a 32-year-old man and a 44-year-old woman were in a vehicle when they were both shot by an unknown person. The man was shot in the back and was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he was initially listed in critical condition. The woman was shot in the left side and back and was taken to U of C, where she was initially listed in fair condition.
- At 8 p.m. in the 9400 block of South Perry Avenue, two men were standing on the sidewalk when an unknown vehicle pulled up, and someone inside shot at the victims multiple times. A 20-year-old man was shot in the leg and transported to Little Company of Mary Hospital in good condition. A 22-year-old man was shot in the foot and was transported to Advocate Christ Medical Center in good condition. The shooter fled the scene in an unknown direction.
- At 8:06 p.m. in the 5400 block of South Paulina Street, officers responded to a gunshot detection alert and found a 44-year-old man with two gunshot wounds to the body. He was transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he was initially listed in good condition. A person of interest is in custody as Area One detectives investigate.
- At 8:10 p.m. in the 1600 block of West 79th Street, a 32-year-old man was on the sidewalk when he was shot in the leg and abdomen by an unknown person. The victim was transported to Advocate Christ Medical Center in critical condition.
- At 8:14 p.m. in the 1000 block of North Lawler Avenue, two men were in a yard when someone shot in their direction. A 44-year-old man was shot in the chest and was transported to Stroger Hospital in critical condition but died a short time later. A 52-year-old was shot in the leg and was transported to Mount Sinai in good condition.
- At 9:17 p.m. in the 7700 block of South Kingston Avenue, a 30-year-old man was exiting his residence when he heard shots and felt pain. The victim did not see anyone shooting but suffered a gunshot wound to the left thigh and was taken to South Shore Hospital in good condition.
- At 10:08 p.m. in the 2500 block of South Spaulding Avenue, a prayer vigil was being held in the front yard of a residence when a jeep stopped on the street when someone unknown exited the vehicle, firing multiple shots. A total of seven people were struck, and they all self-transported to Mt Sinai Hospital. A 32-year-old man suffered multiple gunshot wounds to the body and was in critical condition but died a short time later. The six other victims, ranging from ages 31-51, were last listed in fair condition.
- At 10:46 a.m. in the 10700 block of South Wabash Avenue, officers responded to a person shot on the street and found a 32-year-old man shot. The victim suffered a gunshot wound to the right inner thigh and was transported to Christ Hospital in good condition. The victim was uncooperative with officers about the incident and refused to answer any questions.
- At 11:39 p.m. in the 1900 block of West 47th Street, a 19-year-old man was exiting a business when two unknown males approached and announced a robbery. One of the offenders then pulled a chain from the victim's neck, and then the second offender shot the victim. The victim suffered a gunshot wound to the top of the head and was taken to Stroger Hospital in critical condition.
Shootings from Sunday
- At 12:15 a.m. in the 12400 block of South Parnell Avenue, a 19-year-old man was walking in the alley when an unknown armed male approached and demanded his belongings. The offender did not get any property but fired gunshots and fled on foot. The victim was struck in the hand and taken by fire crews to Roseland Hospital in good condition.
- At 12:48 a.m. in the 2700 block of South Sawyer Avenue, officers responded to the hospital for a call of a person shot. A 33-year-old man told them he was on the sidewalk when a dark-colored sedan pulled alongside and fired shots—striking the victim in the left leg. The sedan fled the scene. The victim self-transported to the hospital with a gunshot wound to the left leg in good condition.
- At 2 a.m. in the 9800 block of South Yale Avenue, a 25-year-old man was standing outside when someone fired shots in the area, and the victim was struck. He was hit in the neck and left shoulder and was dropped off at Christ Hospital in critical condition. The victim was uncooperative with officers about the incident and refused to answer any questions.
- At 2:41 a.m. in the 6800 block of South Prairie Avenue, officers responded to a call of a person down. Upon arrival, officers discovered a 40-year-old unresponsive on the ground with a gunshot wound to the head. Fire crews responded, and the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
- At 5:14 p.m. in the 5700 block of South Wolcott Avenue, a 15-year-old boy was standing near the sidewalk when he was approached by an unknown vehicle. At least one person got out of the vehicle and shot at the victim, striking him multiple times in the legs. The shooter or shooters then fled east on 57th Street in the same vehicle. The victim was transported to Comer Children's Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition.
- At 6:22 p.m. in the 2500 block of West 45th Place, officers responded to a gunshot detection technology alert and found a 28-year-old man inside a vehicle with a gunshot wound to the back. The victim was transported to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition.
Unless otherwise noted, no arrests were made in any of these incidents.
