At Least 7 People Killed, 50 Wounded In Weekend Shootings In Chicago; 7-Year-Old Girl Among Those Killed
CHICAGO (CBS) -- At least 57 people were shot in Chicago over the weekend, and seven of them had been killed.
A 7-year-old girl and a 17-year-old boy were among those killed in separate incidents, and at least nine of the surviving victims were also under 18. The youngest, shot along with the 7-year-old girl in Belmont Central, was that girl's 6-year-old sister.
At 2:50 p.m. Sunday, the two girls were in a vehicle parked on the street the 6200 block of West Grand Avenue, near Merrimac Avenue, when both were shot by an unknown shooter, police said.
The 7-year-old girl, identified by her grandmother as Serenity Broughton, was shot in the chest and torso and was pronounced dead at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood.
Her sister, Aubrey, was shot in the chest and right armpit and her condition was stabilized at the same hospital. She had been moved out of the ICU Sunday night – but had a pierced lung, according to her grandmother, Regina Broughton.
Earlier, the first homicide of the weekend happened at 5:15 p.m. Friday in the 5100 block of West Fullerton Avenue in Belmont Cragin. An 18-year-old man was in the middle of the street when someone went by in a vehicle and shot him.
The victim was shot in the leg, chest, and back and was pronounced dead at the scene. He was identified as Nikko Mercado.
One person was killed and two others were injured in a shooting on the Eisenhower Expressway Friday evening. At 8:34 p.m., Illinois State Police were notified of three walk-in victims of a shooting on the eastbound Eisenhower near Damen Avenue. All were at Stroger Hospital of Cook County.
A 21-year-old man who was driving and a 21-year-old woman who was a passenger, both from Maywood, suffered life-threatening injuries in the shooting. A 17-year-old boy from Maywood died in the shooting.
A second vehicle was damaged by gunfire, but the driver was not injured.
Traffic on the eastbound Eisenhower was redirected onto Western Avenue during the investigation. All lanes were reopened at 1 a.m.
At 12:40 p.m., a 59-year-old man was driving in the 1200 block of North Pulaski Road, near Division Street in West Humboldt Park, when someone from another vehicle shot him, police said.
The victim was shot multiple times in the upper back and right arm. He was pronounced dead at Mount Sinai Hospital.
At 8:15 p.m. Saturday, a 26-year-old man was shot in the torso in the 800 block of East 54th Street on the western edge of Hyde Park. Police said he was on the sidewalk when a white vehicle pulled up and someone inside shot him. The victim was taken a short distance to the University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition, and was later pronounced dead there.
At 1:59 a.m. Sunday, two men – ages 33 and 34 – were outside in a group in the 7500 block of South St. Lawrence Avenue in Grand Crossing when they were each shot. The younger man was shot in the chest and was pronounced dead at the University of Chicago Medical Center, while the older man was shot in the leg and was taken to the same hospital in fair condition. It was not known where the shots came from.
Around 4:30 a.m. Monday, a 70-year-old woman was fatally shot while sitting in her car in Hegewisch. Police said two men came up the woman's car on the 13300 block of South Baltimore Avenue, and started shooting. The woman drove down the block and struck a street sign after she was shot. The woman was taken to University of Chicago Medical Center, where she died.
A shooting left four people injured in Grand Crossing at 12:26 a.m. Sunday. The victims were all standing in front of a home in the 1300 block of East 75th Street when someone fired shots. All self-transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center in fair condition.
A 30-year-old woman and a 31-year-old man were each shot in the leg, while two men, ages 35 and 45, were both shot in the arm and leg.
A shooting in Archer Heights left three people wounded early Sunday. At 2:24 a.m., three people were traveling in a vehicle in the 5000 block of South Archer Avenue when they were all shot.
An 18-year-old woman was shot in the hip and lower backside and was in serious condition, a 19-year-old man was shot in the abdomen and was in critical condition, and a 23-year-old woman was grazed in the head and was in fair condition. All were at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center following the shooting, and were uncooperative with officers.
Chicago police said the chain of events started when someone inside a red Toyota Camry was shooting at a Chevy Tahoe while driving, causing the Tahoe and a black Jeep Cherokee to crash into the restaurant on Archer Avenue. The people inside the Camry ran away and have not been located, but police did find a weapon in the vehicle.
Among teenage victims, at 7:10 p.m. Friday, a 14-year-old girl was shot in the right shoulder and wrist in the 3000 block of South State Street in Bronzeville. The victim was walking down the street when she got into a quarrel and someone shot her. She was taken to the University of Chicago's Comer Children's Hospital in good condition.
A 15-year-old boy was shot and wounded at 4:38 p.m. Saturday in the 1400 block of East 89th Street in Calumet Heights, near Mary E. McDowell Elementary School. He was sitting in a park when someone in a gray Chrysler drove by and shot him. The boy was taken to the U of C's Comer Children's Hospital in good condition with gunshot wounds to the right arm, thigh, and hip.
At 11:36 p.m. Saturday, a 17-year-old boy was one of three people shot inside an apartment building in the 6200 block of South Rhodes Avenue in West Woodlawn. Police said a 49-year-old woman was shot in the torso while on the steps outside the building, a 55-year-old man was shot in the leg while on the steps inside the building, and the teenage boy was shot in the shoulder, hand, and leg while in the hallway.
The older man and woman were each taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, and the teenage boy was taken to Stroger Hospital of Cook County. All were in serious condition.
At 2:02 a.m. Sunday, three teenage boys were found shot at a gas station in the 0-99 block of East 87th Street in Chatham. A 15-year-old boy and a 16-year-old boy were shot in the foot and hand, respectively, and were taken to the U of C's Comer Children's Hospital in good condition, while a 19-year-old man was shot in the lower backside and was taken to the U of C Medical Center in good condition.
At 12:52 a.m. Sunday, a 17-year-old boy was driving east in the 2800 block of West 21st Street in Little Village when someone wearing all black shot him in the back. The teen was treated and released from Stroger Hospital of Cook County.

- At 5:30 p.m. Friday, a 35-year-old man was shot in the head and chest in the 6300 block of South Honore Street in West Englewood and was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition. He had been hanging out on the front porch when some people came up and shot him.
- At 6:50 p.m. Friday, a 40-year-old – police did not specify the gender – was shot in the upper right leg in the 500 block of West 61st Street in Englewood. The victim was walking down the street when a dark-colored sport-utility vehicle went by and someone fired shots. The victim was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in good condition.
- At 10:57 p.m. Friday, a 42-year-old man was walking through Marquette Park in the 2900 block of west Marquette Road, when another man came up, took out a gun, and told him to turn over everything in his pockets. The victim refused and reached for the gun, and the gunman shot him and ran off. The victim was shot once in the hand and was taken to OSF Little Company of Mary Medical Center in good condition.
- At 11:28 p.m. Friday, two men – ages 34 and 42 – were headed south in a vehicle in the 3600 block of South California Avenue in Brighton Park when they heard several shots and felt pain. They self-transported to Mount Sinai Hospital, where the younger man was shot once each below the eye and in the arm and was in critical condition, while the older man was shot once in the leg and was stabilized.
- At 2:46 a.m. Saturday, a 19-year-old man was in his car at a stop sign in the 2400 block of South Trumbull Avenue in Little Village when he heard several shots and felt pain. He was shot once in the shoulder and was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where his condition was stabilized. He was uncooperative with further details.
- At 2:56 a.m. Saturday, a 21-year-old woman was standing outside in the 4500 block of South Wood Street in Back of the Yards when she heard shots and felt pain. She unable to provide further details.
- At 8:29 a.m. Saturday, a 28-year-old man was shot multiple times in the back in the 900 block of North Harding Avenue in Humboldt Park. He was taken to Stroger Hospital of Cook County in critical condition.
- At 2:02 p.m. Saturday, a 20-year-old man was hanging outside on a porch in the 3500 block of West Fifth Avenue in Fifth City when a dark-colored sport-utility vehicle went by and someone inside shot him. He was shot in the left thigh and was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition.
- At 9:07 p.m. Saturday, a 34-year-old woman was driving alone west in the 1300 block of West 71st Street in Englewood when she heard shots and felt pain. She said she did not see a shooter or know where the shots came from. The woman drove to a gas station at 71st Street and Ashland Avenue, where the Fire Department took her to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in good condition with a gunshot wound to the hip.
- At 9:37 p.m. Saturday, a 21-year-old man self-transported to West Suburban Medical Center in Oak Park after being shot in the leg in the 3700 block of West Roosevelt Road in Lawndale. The victim was in fair condition.
- At 10:50 p.m. Saturday, a 30-year-old man was in an alley behind the 7000 block of South Green Street in Englewood when another man walked up and shot him in the leg. The victim was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in good condition.
- At 12:55 a.m. Sunday, a 37-year-old man was standing outside in the 10500 block of South Wentworth Avenue in Fernwood when he was shot in the arm. He said he did not see a shooter or know where the shots came from. He self-transported to Roseland Community Hospital in fair condition.
- At 12:59 a.m. Sunday, a 24-year-old man was walking in the 4600 block of South Ellis Avenue in North Kenwood when someone in a passing black sedan shot him multiple times. He was taken by an acquaintance to the University of Chicago Medical Center in serious condition.
- At 1:26 a.m. Sunday, two men – ages 19 and 30 – were in a vehicle in the 2700 block of South Drake Avenue in Little Village when they were each shot. The older man was shot multiple times throughout the body and the younger man was shot in the leg. Both were taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition.
- At 1:50 a.m. Sunday, a 28-year-old woman was dropped off at St. Bernard Hospital after being shot in the chest in the 700 block of West 69th Street in Englewood. She was later transferred to Stroger Hospital of Cook County where she was in fair condition, and she was uncooperative with responding officers.
- At 2:16 a.m. Sunday, a 34-year-old man was driving in the 400 block of East Illinois Street in Streeterville when a silver sedan pulled up and someone inside shot him in the abdomen. The victim was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital by a relative, and he was in critical condition.
- Two men were shot and critically wounded at 3:30 a.m. Sunday in the 2800 block of West 12th Place in Lawndale. One man, 32, was shot in the chest and abdomen, while the other, 37, was shot in the chest and lower back. Both self-transported to Mount Sinai Hospital.
- At 4:36 a.m. Sunday, a 39-year-old man was preparing to get into a car in the 5200 block of South Sangamon Street in Back of the Yards when someone in a passing white sport-utility vehicle shot him in the head. The victim was taken to the U of C Medical Center in critical condition.
- At 6:55 p.m. Sunday, a 37-year-old man was on the sidewalk in the 1600 block of South Homan Avenue in Lawndale when someone shot him in the right side. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where his condition was stabilized.
- At 7:13 p.m. Sunday, a 49-year-old man was standing in Douglass Park in the 1500 block of South California Avenue when someone shot him in the right leg. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in good condition.
- At 7:22 p.m. Sunday, a 23-year-old man was on the street in the 700 block of East 81st Street in Chatham when someone came up and shot him. The victim was shot in the left leg and was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where his condition was stabilized.
- At 9:56 p.m. Sunday, a woman was in her second-floor bedroom in the 2100 block of North Kilbourn Avenue in Hermosa when a bullet came through the wall and hit her in the neck. The woman was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center in critical condition.
- At 10:12 p.m. Sunday, a 21-year-old man was walking on the sidewalk in the 9500 block of South Colfax Avenue in Jeffery Manor when he heard shots and felt pain. He was taken to the U of C Medical Center in fair condition with gunshot wounds to the right leg and left ankle.
- At 11:13 p.m. Sunday, a 16-year-old boy was standing on the sidewalk on the 6000 block of South Wolcott Avenue in West Englewood, when someone walked up and started shooting. The boy suffered a graze wound to the face, and was taken to University of Chicago Medical Center in fair condition.
- At 11:50 p.m. Sunday, a 31-year-old man was standing inside a restaurant in the 300 block of East 47th Street in Bronzeville, when someone in a gray SUV started shooting. The victim was taken to University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition, with gunshot wounds to the back and left arm.
- At 4:10 a.m. Monday, a 15-year-old boy was driving a vehicle in the 1700 block of West 47th Street in the Back of the Yards neighborhood, when someone shot him in the back. The victim was taken to Stroger Hospital in fair condition.
