CHICAGO (CBS) -- Tornado warnings were issued for some Chicago area counties as severe storms moved through the area from the afternoon until well into the night, and at least one tornado touched down in rural DeKalb County.
Late Monday night, a new tornado warning was issued for southwest Will and north central Kankakee counties until 10:15 p.m. Another tornado warning was issued until 11 p.m. for east central Will County afterward.
Earlier, tornado warnings were issued in rapid succession, starting in DeKalb County and moving east through Kane and DuPage counties.
A severe thunderstorm warning was also issued until 8 p.m. for northern Cook and DuPage counties, with a "tornado possible" tag.
Video taken by freelance photographer Scott Lasker shows a tornado blasting debris through a rural area outside Sycamore. The Sycamore area saw some of the most well-defined tornadoes.
A spotter also reported a large tornado west-southwest of Burlington, Illinois, near Lukens and Plank roads. CBS 2 Meteorologist Robb Ellis reported a dangerous debris signature was spotted near Burlington.
A brief tornado was earlier reported near Kirkland, Illinois, and it lifted after about 30 seconds.
The National Weather Service has also issued a tornado watch for the Chicago area, until 10 p.m. The tornado watch was extended to midnight for Will and Kankakee counties south of Chicago and for Northwest Indiana.
The watch covers Cook, Lake, DuPage, Kane, Will and McHenry counties -- as well as several other counties outside the CBS 2 viewing area
McHenry police also reported confirmed damage on Evergreen Circle, though there was no tornado warning in that area as of 5 p.m.
McHenry County resident Nancy Hodges told CBS 2's Brad Edwards by phone that two series of warning sirens went off – but severe storms hit her house before that happened. She said it sounded like a train, as tornadoes are often described, and she said trees blew and her family headed to the basement.
Catrina Laborn, who manages a Casey's store near Genoa, reported she was locked in the bathroom with her staff as severe storms passed through.
