Chicago To Receive $2.3M To Help With Police Overtime Costs
CHICAGO (AP) -- The city of Chicago is receiving more than $2.3 million in federal money to help cover overtime costs for police officers amid a spike in violent crime.
U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin announced Thursday the city is among the latest recipients of funding from the Department of Justice's Bureau of Justice Assistance.
Bloomington also is getting about $31,000 to buy a 3D scanner. St. Clair County will receive almost $119,000 for squad car cameras, Tasers and vehicles.
Durbin says the grants will help equip officers "with the best, most up-to-date tools to do their jobs effectively and keep residents safe."
Chicago saw its deadliest month in two decades in August, recording 90 homicides. The number of homicides so far this year has increased nearly 50 percent over last year.
