1 Dead, 17 Wounded In Shootings Tuesday Across Chicago
CHICAGO (STMW) -- Chicago saw more than a weekend's worth of gun violence in one day Tuesday, with one man left dead and 17 people wounded in shootings, according to police.
The day's lone fatality occurred shortly before 8 p.m. in the Chicago Lawn neighborhood on the Southwest Side.
A 31-year-old man was walking northbound with a friend in the 6300 block of South Troy Street at 7:52 p.m. when shots rang out and he collapsed, according to Chicago Police.
He was shot in the back of the head and was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was pronounced dead at 8:41 p.m., authorities said. The Cook County medical examiner's office withheld his name early Wednesday, pending notification of his family.
The most recent nonfatal shooting also happened in Chicago Lawn, only blocks away. A 23-year-old man was walking in an alley in the 2800 block of West 63rd Street about 10:20 p.m. when several males walked up and someone opened fire, police said. The man suffered multiple gunshot wounds to the left arm and was taken to Christ Medical Center, where he was listed in serious condition. A police source said he is a self-admitted gang member.
About 8:35 p.m., a 50-year-old man was shot in the West Pullman neighborhood on the Far South Side. He was driving in the 11500 block of South Prairie Avenue when he heard gunfire and realized he'd been shot in the back, police said. He drove himself to Roseland Community Hospital, where his condition was stabilized.
Minutes earlier, two 16-year-old boys were shot in the Southwest Side Marquette Park neighborhood. They were standing on the sidewalk in the 3000 block of West 64th Street at 8:33 p.m. when they heard gunshots and felt pain, police said. One boy was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital with gunshot wounds to his left leg and right thigh, police said. The other was shot in the right leg and taken to Holy Cross Hospital. Both of their conditions were stabilized.
Five minutes earlier, a man was shot in the West Garfield Park neighborhood. The 25-year-old man was shot in the shoulder about 8:28 p.m. in the 4100 block of West Washington Boulevard, police said. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where his condition was stabilized.
A 32-year-old man was shot in the foot at 7:36 p.m. in the 11500 block of South Marshfield Avenue in the Morgan Park neighborhood, police said. He walked in to MetroSouth Medical Center in Blue Island, where his condition was stabilized.
At 6:58 p.m., two men, ages 19 and 26, heard shots and felt pain while standing on the corner in the 3700 block of West Ferdinand Street in the West Side Humboldt Park neighborhood, according to police. The 19-year-old was shot in the neck and was taken to Stroger Hospital, where his condition was stabilized. The 26-year-old was shot in the left leg and was taken to Norwegian American Hospital, where his condition was also stabilized.
Less than 30 minutes earlier, a 42-year-old man was in his vehicle in the 8800 block of South Wood Street at 6:45 p.m., when a black SUV pulled up beside him and someone inside fired shots, hitting him in the head, arm and shoulder, police said. He was taken to Christ Medical Center in critical condition.
About an hour earlier, two men were shot in the Auburn Gresham neighborhood on the South Side. The men, ages 30 and 31, were shot at 5:44 p.m. in the 7900 block of South Ashland Avenue, police said. The 30-year-old man suffered a gunshot wound to the arm, while the 31-year-old man was shot in the hip. They were both taken to Christ Medical Center, where both of their conditions were stabilized. A police source said the men are documented gang members.
Earlier Tuesday afternoon, a woman was shot in the Gage Park neighborhood on the Southwest Side. The 22-year-old was shot in the back at 4:40 p.m. in the 2700 block of West 57th Street, police said. She was a passenger in a vehicle when someone on foot fired shots. She was taken to Christ Medical Center in fair condition.
About 2:30 p.m., two men were shot in a car in the West Englewood neighborhood on the South Side. The two, ages 21 and 27, heard shots and felt pain while driving in the 1500 block of West 58th Street, police said. The 21-year-old was shot in the hand and the 27-year-old was shot in the foot, police said. They drove to Saint Bernard Hospital, where they were both listed in good condition.
Minutes earlier, a man was shot on a sidewalk in the River North neighborhood. The 24-year-old victim was shot in the abdomen at 2:27 p.m. in the 600 block of North Wells Street, according to police. A man walked up to him, pulled out a gun and shot him before driving away in a gray minivan. Police said the two men appear to have had a prior relationship. The victim was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where his condition was stabilized, police said.
That shooting occurred on the west side of Wells Street in between a Japanese restaurant and an MRI clinic. Nick Araujo, 19, was working as a valet at the nearby Wildfire steakhouse when the shooting occurred. Araujo said the shooter – whom he described a black male with a hooded sweatshirt pulled over his face – "was looking real sketchy" and walked around the block twice before firing between six and eight shots.
Tuesday morning, a 57-year-old man was shot in another Auburn Gresham neighborhood attack. He suffered a gunshot wound to the face about 8:40 a.m. in the 8200 block of South Emerald Avenue, police said. The man was taken in serious condition to Stroger Hospital.
In day's first shooting, a man was injured in a drive-by about 12:30 a.m. in the West Lawn neighborhood on the Southwest Side. The 30-year-old was sitting on a porch in the 6200 block of South Kostner Avenue when a vehicle drove by and someone inside opened fire, police said. He was shot in the left leg and was taken in serious condition to Christ Medical Center.
Tuesday's shooting totals exceeded those of the previous weekend, during which one man was killed and 14 others were wounded in shootings between 4 p.m. Friday and 11:30 p.m. Sunday.
