Chicago Rolling Out New Garbage Collection Schedule
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Residents will soon start seeing changes in the garbage collection schedule--all in an attempt to save taxpayers millions of dollars.
The Department of Streets and Sanitation will start switching from a non-linear ward system to a grid system, outlined by major thoroughfares. The grid is designed to make pickup more efficient and save the city up to $20 million, the city said.
The city will begin in June in seven North Side wards: 40, 46, 47, 48, 49, 50 and a portion of ward 44.
The city estimates up to 20 percent fewer crews will be used in the first phase, while providing the same services. By working in a grid, the city expects to reduce fuel and vehicle maintenance expenses.
